Our Latest Lifestyle Obsession: The KonMari Method - Lilliana Vazquez - The LV Guide

The KonMari Method, described in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, preaches organized minimalism as the way to happiness. By no means is this just a cleaning method… it’s a lifestyle. The guiding mantra behind KonMari? Keep only what “sparks joy” in you.

Where there was once Hygge in the lifestyle blogosphere, there is now KonMari. KonMari is the new black. KonMari is all about purging your life of any unnecessary clutter or stressors. The ugly sweater hanging in your closet that you haven’t worn in 3 years? Go ahead and donate it to charity. The months of magazines stacked on your bedside table that you still haven’t gotten around to reading? Toss them in the recycling bin. KonMari bases itself on the idea that clutter around you creates chaos, both externally and internally. Eliminate external clutter from your life as a means to get rid of internal chaos that distracts you from what you truly value. These valued things, both tangible and intangible, are the things that spark joy. Once you are rid of excess clutter, you have more energy to devote to these things.

Visualize what you want your life to look like with a decluttered space. Why is it important to you? Define these goals for yourself as an incentive to keep up with the method in the future. Do you want more room to move around and entertain your friends? Are you planning a move and need to downsize? Do you want more time to do what you enjoy instead of endlessly trying to clean up? Having a purpose to have a decluttered life is one of the key elements of KonMari. You have to ask yourself “why.”

As someone who owns about a million pairs of shoes, two million books, and three million tubes of lipstick, I’m admittedly not a minimalist. Not even close. But you know what? That’s okay- everyone’s KonMari will look different, for everyone has different things that spark joy in them. That is what is beautiful about KonMari. If something sparks joy in you, hold it dear to you and give it its own special place. Just because you are downsizing does not mean that you have to get rid of the things you love.

A taste of KonMari will have you thirsting for more. Every little bit of clutter tossed or donated feels like a breath of fresh air, a step in the right direction. A weight off of your shoulders that you did not know was there. There is something about this method that feels so, for a lack of a better word, cleansing. So go ahead, drink the KonMari Kool-Aid.
