Mom With Style: 5 Workouts You Can Do While The Kids Nap
As a busy mom, some days the only time you get to yourself is nap time. With that limited amount of time, I’ve found that it’s easy to come up with excuses to skip your workout, but you really shouldn’t. I know that, when I’m consistently adding a workout to my day, I have a clearer mind, more energy, and I’m generally happier – making me a much better mom to my busy boys!
So before you take naptime to do things around the house, or catch up on Housewives (which is what I’m always tempted to do!), prioritize those first 30 minutes of nap time for a quick workout.
I’ve put together a list of my 5 favorite workouts you can do while your little ones are napping – or even when you just have limited time!
Quick HIIT Workout
HIIT Workouts are some of my very favorite. They get your heart rate up for quick bursts and then you recover briefly and do it again (and again, and again). I typically turn to Pinterest for new ideas and I’ve really liked doing this workout. It’s a real calorie burner and is under 30 minutes. Don’t worry if you can’t do it all on the first try, just work up to the suggested times and do your best!
Streaming Barre Workouts
I learned about at-home barre workouts when I was pregnant with my youngest son and was slowly losing my motivation to make it to the studio. I was surprised that I only needed a chair and a few props (3 lb. weights, a ball and maybe a band), to do a workout. Pure Barre has an on-demand subscription that you can sign up for and stream a class to your tablet, phone or computer wherever and whenever.
Tone It Up Workouts
The Tone It Up ladies also have great options for limited time, at-home workouts. I love that they’re super upbeat and provide a lot of great resources, ideas and encouragement. I especially like their Daily Workout Videos, because they’re easily accessible, usually around 30 minutes and you really work hard!
Sometimes there’s no time for a full workout, so I’ll opt for a quick ab circuit (hopefully followed by a walk or bike ride with the kids when they wake up). Lately, I will do this:
30 single-leg bicycle crunches
20 shoulder taps in high plank
20 plank jacks
I’ll repeat this 2-3 times, depending on how strong I feel that day. I also do this after my spin workouts on my Peloton bike.
Aaptiv is a really cool concept that brings you workout classes with a trainer to your phone. There are cardio classes (including treadmill and elliptical), strength classes and even maternity-specialized classes that you can download. There’s great music, encouraging trainers and workouts at every level. This would also be a great one to take on vacation with you when you want to stay on track!
